If your infant is regurgitating wihtout any obvious reason, it is important to note that the child could be suffering from Acid Reflux. Other symptoms such as stunted growth, poor weight gain, feeding problems, irritation in the food pipe, anemia, or any kind of respiratory diseases are also possible factors that could mean that your infant has this disease. Usually most parents don’t actually realise the serious effects of this disease, because there are no obvious symptoms. But it is necessary to understand that the earlier parents consults the physician before the symptoms become too serious, the easier it will be to treat it.
Apart from that, a variety of respiratory symptoms also occur in infants. Due to irritation in the food pipe, there is a subsequent inflammation in the air pipe also, resulting in heavy wheezing and chronic cough. If these symptoms become serious, it could also lead to pneumonia, especially in infants with neurologic impairment.
Research has shown that Acid Reflux is pretty common and sometime could be overlooked in infants and children. The immature digestive systems in children are usually to blame, and most infants grow out of the Acid Reflux problem by the time they are a year old. Nevertheless, the child’s physician should always be consulted if these symptoms are a regular problem. Simple strategies such as burping the infant several times during feeding or keeping the infant in an upright position for 30 minutes after feeding, are simple suggestions to make sure the condition does not get severe.
If your child is older, then it is recommended to avoid having foods such as beverages containing caffeine, chocolates, peppermint and spearmint, pizza and other spicy foods, acidic foods such as oranges and tomatoes, and of course, fried and fatty foods. Also, it is recommended to avoiding eating two or three hours before bed and to sleep keeping the head on a raised pillow. If these changes do not work, then medicines should be prescribed for the child. In rare cases, the also child could need surgery.
Mostly the symptoms of Acid Reflux in adults and children are the same, but for children it is necessary to understand that it is difficult for them to describe these symptoms, hence parents must always pay extra attention to the habits of their infants and children to avoid Acid Reflux from getting serious.
