The Chinese have been known for their take on alternative medicine. It is no surprise that it is, hence, one of the most controversial and yet trusted form of treatment in the Western World. The Chinese have always looked to nature for healing. Whether it is an orthopedic problem or even a coronary condition, it can be rectified, if one pays attention to what nature has to offer.
According to Giovanni Maciocia, who wrote the “Foundations of Chinese Medicine”, he says that the causes for Acid Reflux are, irregular eating habits and diet, eating late at night, skipping meals, eating in too much of a hurry, and eating while under stress.
For a condition such as Acid Reflux, it is already a known fact that, in order to detoxify the stomach and reduce the irritability of corrosive stomach juices from entering the esophageal sphincter (LES), one must have foods that are natural stomach cleansers. Mostly, the stomach is considered to be main organ that is associated with Acid Reflux, but Chinese medicine also looks at other organs that could be a cause for this condition, the most important being, the liver.
In an experiment, conducted at Australia's University of Adelaide recently, researchers used the ancient Chinese art of Accupressure therapy on 14 healthy volunteers. The pressure point used in this case was Neigun, situated on the wrist, as well as a sham pressure point on the hip. It was found that there was 40% fewer relaxations of the LES, as compared to the accupressure at the sham hip point. When the LES is relaxed, small amounts of corrsive stomach juices can enter and hence irritate the oesophagus. Thus, relaxation of the LES actually prompts heartburn. In other words, accupressure could be the key to reducing level of Acid Reflux in the body.
Apart from that, another ancient Chinese medicine, extracted from the resin of the pine tree is something that is catching the attention of researchers all over the world. Ecabet sodium is the white powder that is developed from the resin. It has been found that this powder has quite a few protective effects on the stomach. Apart from reducing the pepsin activity, which is a known cause of ulcers, by up to 78%, this natural powder also is responsible for thickening the lining of the stomach, thus providing extra protection from the gastric juices.
Some other Chinese herbs that are useful in bringing down levels of Acid Reflux are as follows:
- Bei Sha Shen ("bay shah shen," which is a Coastal Glehnia root)
- Yu Zhu ("yew joo," a Chinese Solomon's Seal root)
- Mai Men Dong ("my men dohng," Mondo Grass or Lilyturf tuber)
- Shi Hu ("shih hoo," Dendrobium orchid stems)
- Bai Mu Er ("buy moo are," White Wood Ear Mushroom)
