The above proverb perhaps underlines the significance of diet. Diet is an important factor that is linked to our overall well-being. Having a good and well balanced diet can help in leading a healthy life. It also aids in keeping many lifestyle-associated diseases at bay.

Diet can prove a useful ally in combating acid reflux. Since acid reflux is directly related to stomach, it is but natural that the food that goes into the stomach will play a role in all stomach related ailments.

So what are the have and the have-nots for those suffering from acid reflux?

Water should find a prime importance in your dietary needs. Take the recommended eight glasses. Besides diluting the stomach acids, it also helps the body to flush away the excess. Avoid drinks like tea, coffee and soft drinks as well as aerated drinks. Fruit juices are allowed as long as you do not include fruits containing citrus acid and this includes lime, lemon and oranges.

Similarly, try to avoid fast food. Fast food is low in fiber and spicy as well as oily which only aggravates acid reflux. One should also try to avoid liquor, as it is not at all good for the tummy. Instead go in for apple or papaya. One can consume apple in any form i.e. fresh, dried or a simple good ole apple juice. Even apple cider vinegar is known to provide relief from acid reflux.

Ice- creams and chocolates - how we love that cold cream melting in our mouth and the chocolate slowly tingling the taste buds. But alas! Ice cream and chocolates CANNOT be a part of your diet if , you are suffering form acid reflux.

What does augur well for someone suffering from acid reflux is a lot of green vegetables. Vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, and peas etc. can be used to provide relief from acid reflux. Leafy vegetables are also recommended as they contain a lot of raw fiber.

If you have a liking for meat products, then try to have skinless chicken breast, extra lean beef etc. You can also treat your taste buds with egg whites. Low fat fish and turkey can also be added to your non-vegetarian list. But refrain from consuming high fat and oily meat like chicken nuggets, marbled sirloin, buffalo wings etc. They are sure to irritate your esophagus.

Thus having a proper and balnced diet can help in maintaining a control over acid reflux. And remember a proper diet will aid you in keeping your esophagus happy.
